A few days ago, a young talented artist and calligrapher Zhang Wenhan delivered a lecture on the theme “Calligraphy and Culture”. The lecture was initiated by the Huatong Federation of Literature and Culture, and the organizers and performers were the House of Culture, the Association of Calligraphers and the Union of Artists.
Having gathered in the conference hall of the Huatong City Cultural Center, more than forty calligraphers and calligraphy enthusiasts listened to a wonderful lecture by Mr. Zhang Wenhan.
Teacher Zhang Wenhan is a post-eighties calligrapher scholar who is well versed in poetry, calligraphy, painting, and carving.
Presenting complex things in an accessible language, he gave a lecture on the following issues, which proved to be very useful for the students: the use of cultural resources to support calligraphy; poetry, literature, painting, carving; Calligraphy and Chinese hieroglyphics; calligraphy and paired inscriptions; calligraphy and poetry; the history of the art of calligraphy; aesthetic pleasure of calligraphy; calligraphic heritage and creativity.
The lecture covered a wide range of issues – from the appearance of calligraphy to fortune-telling inscriptions on bones and tortoise shells, inscriptions on bronze, five calligraphic styles; from spiritual culture to Chuang Tzu and Zhou-i; from paired inscriptions on columns to ancient poems, from Li Bai to Du Fu, Wang Wei, Wang Li, etc. The fact that he spoke with such enthusiasm about the famous calligraphers of antiquity and modernity, about the famous calligraphic samples of famous people, compelled listeners to feel the vastness of luggage and the depth of historical culture and the ancient poetic culture of Zhang Wenhan, which are inseparable from his zeal and wide range of reading.
